Delight In Innocence

Delight in innocence,

it lasts so brief a time.

The pressures all around,

from commerce, media,

and your peers,

crowd in,

and childhood is diminished,

shortened,

lost.

Your teenage years are

reached too soon,

with all their challenges

and pain.

The simple pleasures,

animals and toys,

excursions as a family,

and bedtime stories,

secrets with a friend,

or dressing-up

and dancing in the sun;

immerse yourself in all,

and when they pass

remember them

when you have children

of your own,

they’ll be the richer, too.

Delight in these few

precious years

ere they are gone.
